Selfish? Or submissive?

Several months ago I was praying at the altar, once again laying my cares and burdens at the feet of Jesus. As I stood there, I began to think, “Why am I always casting my cares on God? Isn’t that selfish? Shouldn’t I be serving Him with my life rather than burdening Him with my cares?”

But as I continued praying I believe God whispered to my heart and I realized something very important – bringing our cares to the Lord shows that He is sovereign in our lives.

The Next Generation…

“I love preaching to youth. You are the next generation.”

I sat in youth service listening to the guest speaker, a young man not much older than myself, and wondered how many times I had heard those words before.

“You are the next generation.” “You are tomorrow’s leaders.” “You are the workforce of the future.”

Yes, teenagers and young 20-somethings have great potential and will eventually become the unmoving pillars of the church. But the question almost asked itself…

“Why are we the next generation when we are living in a now world? Why are we the next generation when we could be the now generation?”

These hands…

They are not beautiful hands.

Working with wood for years have created calluses and scars which are easily lined with dust. The sun has turned them a deep tan from long exposure.

They are the hands of a worker.

Of Tests and Trials

As a Christian, something I’ve always struggled with is the idea of God testing his children.

I can understand God rebuking us for our sinful actions. I know that there are consequences which we bring upon ourselves.

But the idea that God tests our loyalty to and love for Him seemed pointless to me.
